At the end of the day any boat is a compromise. That being said, I just got a new Kodiak with the Fly Fishing Show discount to replace my 20+ year old Water Master with the updated Kodiak design. I love the design evolution - especially the pointed stern and bow which I think makes the boat row 25-35% more efficiently.
Fly tyers can be masters at making things complicated! Poor quality materials and tools are destined to discourage beginner tiers and cause greater expense when the time comes to replace them.
The fly can be fished w/ or without the head, and if the head has more than one shape (front vs back) it can be reversed for a different action. Most of the way down this page there's some smaller-sized individual heads you can buy.
Another good reference is a booklet called "Fundamental Concepts of Bamboo Fly Rod Design," published by Tom Fulk, an Anacortes rod maker. I've used a variation of Tom's "Tru-Arc" design process for many years in designing my own rods. I believe you can order the book directly from Tom.
