What is the difference between "Program Files" and "Program Files X86"?
In Windows 7 there are two folders, "Program Files" and "Program Files X86". What is difference between them? Where does a 64 Bit program get installed?

184 I know that on a 64-bit version of Windows the "Program Files" folder is for 64-bit programs and the "Program Files (x86)" folder is for 32-bit programs, but why is this even necessary? By "necessary", I don't mean "why could Microsoft not have made any other design decisions?" because of course they could have.

Program Files is intended for 64-bit applications for general access but installation is restricted to administrators. Programs that try to store information here will likely have that data transparenently routed to a virtual store (the data will look like it's in a given folder to a program but it will actually be stored elsewhere).

How to remove the Program Files folder from a non-system drive
DeliveryOptimization, Program Files, WindowsApps, WpSystem After a reboot I found that "Program Files" came back on D:, with one folder in it named "ModifiableWindowsApps". I used SysInternals Process Monitor to find the process that was creating the folder. It appeared to be: C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe -k wsappx -p -s AppXSvc.

permissions - How to delete "Program Files" and "WindowsApps" folders ...
The folders I want to delete are Program Files and WindowsApps. There used to be more folders I wanted to delete and I did following the steps from the Internet either without. The folders are empty and if I delete it nothing will change in my OS, as they don't weight even a byte and aren't used any time.
